This is the first I've heard of the effort in an internet-registration-official
way. But books have been travelling up and down the trail for years. In 11 years
of long-distance AT hiking I've left a bunch & taken a bunch carrying them up
the trail until I was finished. Some paperbacks have notations in them
indicating where/when they were picked up. In '97 the story of Shackleton & the
Endurance was making it up & down the trail. --RD

Has anyone caught or released a www.bookcrossing.com book on the AT?
